A Guide to Creatively Handling a Child's Dental Health

My family's dental health is important to me. Unfortunately for me, it is not as important to my little ones. Getting my kids to brush and floss on a daily basis is almost like taking on an obstacle course. I talked to my family's dentist about different methods I could try to encourage them to brush and floss on a regular basis. Some of the tricks worked, some did not. After some experimentation and talking to other parents, I was able to come up with a lot of great tips for helping kids care for their teeth. I started this blog to help other parents get creative when it comes to their kids and dental care.

Successfully Manage Your Post-Dental Crown Pain And Discomfort

Bella Snyder

As a dental patient, it is completely natural to fear pain after your new dental crowns are installed. While this is a valid concern, there are a few things you can purchase ahead of time to ensure that you have everything necessary on hand to combat any pain you may experience.

Topical Anesthetic Gel

The topical anesthetic gel sold for baby teething pain can safely be used to treat your dental pain. Simply rub the gel on any areas of pain for complete but temporary relief of pain in your tooth and gums.

A Container of Table Salt

If your new dental crowns cause your gums to ache, you can treat this discomfort with a warm saltwater rinse. Add a teaspoon to a mug of warm water, swish the salt solution around in your mouth for a minute, and then spit it out.

Warning: If you are on a salt-restricted diet, then you should not use a saltwater rinse without first speaking with your doctor or dietitian.

Your Favorite Tea Bags

When it comes to dental pain, tea bags serve a dual purpose. You can brew yourself a warm mug of soothing tea to drink, and you can place the warm tea bag directly on your sore gums for additional pain relief.

A Bag of Frozen Corn

Small frozen vegetables like corn and peas can easily be used as a moldable ice pack for your sore cheek and jaw areas. Break apart the vegetables and wrap the bag of veggies in a thin towel. Apply the ice pack to your sore face and let it sit until your pain has been relieved. The bag of vegetables can be placed into the freezer for later use.

Fill Your Prescription

Even if you do not like to take narcotic pain medications, you should still fill the pain medication prescription your dentist gives to you. You never know if you may need the extra pain relief help that the medication can provide, and the absolute last thing you want to do to is be in pain and have to go sit and wait at your local pharmacy.

Conclusion

While the installation of dental crowns is not a discomfort-free dental procedure, preparing for any pain ahead of time allows you to relax and better tolerate this necessary procedure. If you have additional question about how you can treat your dental crown pain, then you should speak with your dentist.
